The Civil War in the United States, followed by the havoc created by General Banks in Louisiana, contributed to the change of public opinion that made possible for Davis to send troops to support the Confederates fighting in Mexico. The United States Army's Third Corps, which was one of the first divisions to arrive at Port Hudson, had to attack the East wall of the fortress. The Union troops managed to penetrate into the city, but were defeated by General Watts. They tried to advance towards the rear of Port Hudson, but could not do so. After receiving news about General Banks' defeat in Louisiana, Davis sent troops from Florida and Texas to reinforce his forces at Monterrey, which was one of his most important objectives in Mexico. The Union forces were able to capture a fort and take over artillery positions that would allow them to attack the city. The sole objective of General McCook was to capture Saltillo, which would force the Confederates to retreat far into Texas, and thus relieve pressure on Grant's army in Louisiana. The Confederates had defeated General Sigel's division at La Mesilla Valley; however, once again President Davis asked for volunteers from Texas and Florida, for their bravest men who wanted to fight in Mexico. General Houston wanted to attack the city of Monterrey, which was defended by General Escobedo. He sent General Woll to test the strength of the enemy positions. When the Union forces were about 3 miles from Monterrey, they were attacked by General Escobedo's cavalry, who inflicted several casualties among them. The Confederates decided to withdraw their troops because they had almost no artillery support. To relieve pressure on Grant's army at Vicksburg after Bragg's defeat at Chattanooga, Grant ordered an expedition to move towards Jackson, Mississippi; however this army could not achieve its objective because it was ambushed by Confederate troops at Champion Hill. Confederate troops were able to keep control of the fort of Carrizal for a few hours, but were defeated by General Smith's troops. In spite of this defeat, however, Davis still considered sending reinforcements from Texas and Florida. The Confederate troops have been defeated by General Smith's troops. They have tried to take on the enemy again on a new site, but they failed again because they could not launch an attack on terrain that was favorable for them.
